At a time when America is suffering from poverty, gangsters are terrorizing the country, and alcohol is prohibited, Maxie Pierce finds herself facing even greater problems. Her father has gone missing, her mother is indifferent, and her relatives seem to be hiding something. Maxie feels that the only person she can trust is her Auntie Rose, who operates the Arcade Hotel in "Little Chicago," otherwise known as Sioux City. Maxie soon learns that her aunt isn't without tarnish, either. Questionable characters keep showing up at the hotel, which makes her wonder if Rose's husband is up to no good with the Chicago mob. When one of the hotel patrons takes a plunge out of a two-story window, accusations start flying. Maxie decides to investigate the incident on her own, but strange, diabolical things keep getting in her way. Eventually, she comes to realize one important "There's no place like home … even if it is corrupt.”
