A cavalry officer without a horse. A child without a home. A government without a country.

Jozef Ondraski, a first lieutenant in the Polish cavalry during WWII, finds himself without country, family, or home, as Nazi Germany takes over every aspect of life. When he decides to make his way to England to offer his services as a translator to the Polish Government in Exile in London, he must take a perilous journey through enemy territory rife with trouble and treachery, accompanied by only a loyal little orphan boy for a traveling companion. When the unthinkable happens in the beautiful French countryside, he must reach out to the unseen Hand of God for help.

Dorota Katowski's days and nights are spent surrounded with friends and family, but she still pines for her younger sisters, away in the comparative safety of a rural British girls' school. And she cannot reconcile herself to the possible fate of her childhood friend, Jozef Ondraski. If Jozef ever makes his way back to her side, will he be changed? Or must she face the future without him?
