Freddie Drummond is a reserved sociology professor at Berkeley, engaged to a wealthy aristocratic woman named Catherine Van Vorst. While he is fascinated with the south part of San Francisco, he creates an alter ego, Big Bill Totts, and as such gets deeper and deeper involved in the life and labor organisation of the district.
