All Kinds of Places is a story about Walter O'Brien, a 38-year-old traveler who is summoned home from his self-created Indonesian utopia. Back in his native Washington, DC, his mother takes away his financial support and his life of leisure and freedom ends abruptly. He finds a place to live, a job, a love interest, and he tries to live an adult life.
Despite this good fortune and the support of his two best friends, John and Sammy, he struggles to find his place. Walt drifts back to memories from the years on the road, and attempts to succeed though often his efforts, such as a renewed pursuit of art, are not sustained. He confronts his overwhelming desire to be free when circumstances will not allow for that, and the stark reality that he needs to be an adult, finally.
