More Details

On 15 January 1842, the wounded and exhausted Surgeon Brydon rode slowly into Jalalabad. He was the sole survivor of General Elphinstone's Army of the Indus, wiped out en route from Kabul by rebellious Afghans. Sixteen thousand soldiers, camp-followers, women, and children had perished, and the star of the British Raj, once bright, seemed to many to be on the wane . On its first publication, this account attracted widespread acclaim and was reputedly the spur to George MacDonald Fraser in his creation of the redoubtable Flashman.
