Fifteen-year-old Danny Elikai must keep his promise to his brother Matthew: to resist the Emperor of Destiny’s relentless mental torment to make him kill himself before he can find the King of Free Will. The King’s faithful believe he will return to reunite his generals and stop the Crusaders from enslaving humanity to the Ironclad will of Destiny. This will ensure the Emperor will rise, and the Final War to rule Creation will commence.

The problem is that Danny is lost in his devastating depression and utterly unaware of any of this. He doesn’t know his parents and brother were brutally murdered by the Emperors’ first crusader, an agent of Destiny who violently torments the citizens of Grenoff, Wisconsin. As Danny begins to claw his way out of the darkness, he becomes aware that everyone in his life, including his new friends Jesse, Henry, Izabelle, and the mysterious Michael, are holding onto secrets. Danny must uncover these secrets to find the King before the remaining Crusaders rise during the Winter Solstice.
