Three young nuclear physicists working with the Pottersby Research Centre in Berkshire meet accidental deaths at separate times and in different locations while mountaineering.

Superintendent Masters and Inspector Green of Scotland Yard are called in to investigate, and they soon discover a closed, intrigue-ridden scientific community seething with professional and personal jealousies.
