Once the greatest city on earth, Tumanbay has fallen into the hands of two opposing warlords: Grand Master Amalric, blind leader of the Balarac, a fearsome religious order of knights; and Fatima, the ruthless widow of a murdered governor. Fatima exerts total control over young Sultana Manel, who finds herself isolated and weak following the executions of her father and lover. Manel’s only ally, her uncle, the spymaster Gregor, is trapped in the “Palace of the Blind”, a madhouse in the desert. He is banished for claiming that the Sultana's lover, Alkin, has returned from the dead. But Gregor is convinced of what he saw, and that Alkin’s return heralds the end for Tumanbay. If he is to save the city, he must first escape.
