The Narcissist is the first novel by Singaporean journalist Edmund Wee. Set in Paris and London, the novel follows the trail of a young, callow homosexual narrator who gradually discovers the darker side of men. The two themes woven throughout the novel are self-discovery and self-love.
The protagonist begins his journey by reluctantly following his ambitious boyfriend, Julian, to London in an attempt to salvage their crumbling relationship. Flung into an unfamiliar city, the narrator is at first disenchanted and bored. In the struggle against his monotonous routine, he soon discovers a dizzying, exciting world of new opportunities.
While in London, he makes the aquaintance of a mysterious new friend, who gives voice to many of the questions he has about life. As the young man embarks on his journey of self-discovery, he begins to develop a taste for self-gain and freedom. Eventually he realises that life presents us with endless opportunities, if only we dare to make choices...
