Atanas Radenski is the author of Dessa’s Crossing: A Novel and Other Stories (2025), which draws on his daughter’s experiences in mountain search-and-rescue work in the Pacific Northwest.
His English-language writing has been published by MIT Press, Springer, Elsevier, Duke University Press, and others. Two earlier novels were published in Bulgarian, in 2016 and 2019. His current project is an alternate-history campus novel set in an authoritarian version of the United States and in Australia, with the working title United Republics of America, 1989: A Campus Comedy.
Born and educated in Bulgaria, Atanas immigrated to the United States in 1990. He left full-time academic work in 2018 to focus on writing and travel. He is Professor Emeritus at Chapman University in Orange, California. He now writes fiction and hikes in the deserts of the American Southwest.
