I graduated from the California State University with a degree in English Education. In my early career I was a software engineer, but I come from a family of writers. My parents were both award-winning television and newspaper journalists. I learned how to write a news lead at age six. I broke my first statewide front-page story in 10th grade. I've always been a storyteller.

I believe reading well is the most important skill a young person can learn. As someone academically qualified to teach the English language, I invest an extra effort to make sure my stories encourage young people to improve their knowledge of language and imagery and become better readers.

When I set out to create the Greatest Fighting Team of Teenage Girls Ever Assembled, I didn't realize how big this world would become. I write the LadyStar stories to be inspiring and educational. Each of my characters has a different personality, and I think every reader will find someone they can identify with. I like to say there are more girl heroes in this series than all other book series combined.

I believe girls deserve thrilling stories about teamwork and standing together against the forces of evil. I think they also deserve authentic heroines who are just like them.

I originally created Jessica Halloran more than fifteen years ago as character for a video game series called LadyStar: Reflections in a Dream. Since then, she has appeared in more media than any other character I've ever written, including manga, an animated television series, mobile games, comics, officially licensed merchandise, audiobooks and radio plays. She makes cameo appearances in three other book series including science fiction, LitRPG and even a couple of romances. My colleagues have occasionally asked me to describe her in one sentence. My answer has always been "Jessica is a human ray of sunshine."

Jessica's adventures have always been a little bit silly, a little bit magical and a little bit scary, but she leads a team of tough magical warriors who stand for courage and friendship above all else.
