Carolina Trujillo Píriz was born in Montevideo. At the age of six she came to the Netherlands with her mother and sister, as a political refugee. She attended the Amsterdam Film Academy and became a screenwriter in 1996.
In 1991, she won the first prize in an Argentinian novel contest with De exilios, maremotos y lechuzas. In 2002 she was awarded the Dutch Marten Toonder/Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs for De bastaard van Mal Abrigo (her Dutch debut). In 2010 she won the BNG Nieuwe Literatuurprijs with her second Dutch novel: De terugkeer van Lupe García.
