Pierre Marchand was a French publisher who played a major role in giving French publishing an international and visually innovative dimension. Born in Bouin in 1939, he began his career in printing and typography before completing military service in Algeria and working in various jobs, including at Éditions Fleurus. In 1971, he co-created the sailing magazine Voiles et Voiliers with Jean-Olivier Héron, an early project that later led him into major publishing innovation. The following year he joined Éditions Gallimard, where he founded Gallimard Jeunesse and transformed children’s publishing through visually rich, concept-driven collections. He developed influential series such as “1000 Soleils,” “Folio Junior,” and the encyclopaedic “Découvertes Gallimard,” which became internationally successful and redefined illustrated nonfiction. Known for his exacting visual standards and creative control, he treated book design as an art form. Later in his career he moved to Hachette as a creative director, continuing his work in illustrated publishing until his death in 2002.
