Hiroshi Homura (穂村弘), born in 1962 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is a celebrated contemporary tanka poet, essayist, critic, translator, and author of picture books. A graduate of Sophia University’s English Literature faculty, he made his poetic debut in 1990 with Syndicate (シンジケート), quickly becoming a central figure in the “New Wave Tanka” movement of the 1990s. Over his career, he has received numerous distinguished awards—including the Itō Sei Literary Award for Tanka no Yūjin, the Kodansha Essay Award for Torihada ga, and the Wakayama Bokusui Prize for Suichū Yokusen Enjōchū—and has contributed widely across genres, from critical essays to children’s picture books and translations
